The investigation conducted by COFEPRIS adhered to the international protocols outlined in the agency's July 23 statement. COFEPRIS notes that the link between the recent outbreak in the United States and the consumption of lettuce is based on epidemiological association — that is, on suspicions derived from patient interviews and statistical analysis, and therefore on probabilities rather than on laboratory testing of agricultural products yielding positive evidence of Cyclospora cayetanensis. Following the sanitary inspection and verification visit conducted from July 18 to 20 at the Taylor Farms facility in Mexico, COFEPRIS found no evidence of the parasite. Testing performed by the COFEPRIS National Reference Laboratory returned negative results for Cyclospora cayetanensis. Ten lettuce samples were analyzed (five of whole raw product and five of processed product), along with four water samples. All analyses were performed with full scientific rigor using standard molecular methods based on real-time PCR. COFEPRIS further emphasizes that the sample that produced a false-positive result — reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Sunday, July 19 — was drawn from a shipment held at the customs facility in Laredo, Texas, and never entered U.S. territory. COFEPRIS reaffirms that its sanitary surveillance actions are grounded in sound scientific evidence and laboratory investigation, in strict compliance with national and international food safety standards, thereby safeguarding public health in Mexico and the integrity of Mexican exports.
